Comprehensive Respiratory Testing for Viral and Bacterial Infections

Respiratory RT-PCR Panels

Respiratory illnesses are surging across the U.S. As of February 21, 2025, the rate of acute respiratory illness leading individuals to seek healthcare remains at a high level, according to the CDC. Nearly 8% of outpatient visits are for flu-like symptoms, the highest flu activity in 15 years (CDC).

A high level of acute respiratory illness means that a lot of people are seeking medical care for respiratory symptoms. This measure includes a broad range of conditions, from mild illnesses like the common cold to more severe infections such as COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. Because it captures overall respiratory illness trends rather than just one specific virus, it provides a clearer picture of how respiratory diseases are impacting healthcare systems. A high level indicates increased strain on hospitals and clinics, emphasizing the need for comprehensive and accurate laboratory testing.

Distinguishing between different respiratory infections is crucial for treatment and public health efforts.

Broad Detection for Respiratory Pathogens

The Accutest® Respiratory RT-PCR Panels provide comprehensive detection of common respiratory pathogens. These panels identify 95% of the most prevalent clinical cases, ensuring accurate and efficient results.

Two Respiratory RT-PCR Panels

  1. Respiratory RT-PCR Panel I – Covers 26 key respiratory pathogens, including Influenza A/B, RSV AB, SARS-CoV-2, Bordetella pertussis, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. This panel detects both viral and bacterial infections that cause respiratory symptoms.
  2. Respiratory RT-PCR Panel II – Includes basic key pathogens, more bacterial targets and a total of 27 targets, adding Haemophilus influenza type B, Human Rhinovirus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, among others. This panel provides a broader diagnostic tool for complex respiratory infections.

Comparing the Panels

While both panels offer broad detection, they have some differences:

  • Panel I includes Enterovirus D and Moraxella catarrhalis, which are absent in Panel II. These are important in those respiratory infections, which primarily affect children and individuals with weakened immune systems.
  • Panel II detects Haemophilus influenza type B, Human Rhinovirus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, providing added coverage for bacterial infections and one of the most common viral causes of colds.
  • Both panels detect major respiratory pathogens like Influenza A/B, RSV AB, SARS-CoV-2, Bordetella pertussis, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, ensuring comprehensive viral and bacterial identification.

Key Advantages

  • Broad Pathogen Coverage: Detects both viral and bacterial infections
  • One-Step Master Mix: Removes the pre-amplification step, streamlining workflow
  • Flexible Formats: Available in 384-well, 96-well plate, and tube formats
  • Compatible: Can be run on most RT-PCR analyzers currently on the market

Viral vs. Bacterial Respiratory Infections

Not all respiratory infections are caused by viruses. Some result from bacteria, requiring different treatment approaches.

  • Viral Infections: Include COVID-19, influenza, RSV, and common cold coronaviruses. They spread easily and often resolve on their own. Antiviral medications may help in some cases.
  • Bacterial Infections: Include pneumonia, pertussis (whooping cough), and Legionella pneumophila infections. These often require antibiotics and can lead to complications if untreated.

Because symptoms overlap, distinguishing between viral and bacterial infections based on symptoms alone is difficult. This is why accurate testing is essential.

The Importance of Pre-Selected Targets

The Accutest® Respiratory RT-PCR Panels focus on pre-selected targets that account for the vast majority of respiratory infections. This targeted approach ensures relevant, reliable results while optimizing workflow efficiency.
